Crown Mountain Farms Silk Fibers - Mulberry
Approximately two full grown mulberry trees and 4,000 eggs are needed to produce 12 pounds of silk cocoons. 12 cocoons produce about one pound of reeled silk. The average yearly crop in Japan is 100 pounds of raw reeled silk. Silkworm rearing obtains the raw material, the cocoons. The silk is then carefully reeled and at some point de-gummed and re-reeled. The final re-reeling process is the most difficult work considering the fine fiber is easily tangled and broken. For a skilled re- reeler, completing one-half pound is a day's work. The natural color of silk comes from the diet the silk worm is fed. Each species of wild silk worm feeds on a certain type of plant. Mulberry Silk is derived from worm fed exclusively on Mulberry leaves.
